A hypothesized neutral position or region in a bipolar stimulus dimension, functioning as a reference point for subjective judgements, stimuli above the adaptation level being judged to have a particular attribute (such as large, heavy, or loud), stimuli below it being judged to have the opposite or complementary attribute (small, light, or soft), and stimuli in its vicinity being judged to be neutral with respect to the attribute.
