US social worker and reformer. With her friend Ellen Grates Starr, she opened Hull House in Chicago in 1889, a pioneer settlement house for workers and immigrants. A pioneer of the new discipline of sociology, she had considerable influence over the planning of neighbourhood welfare institutions throughout the country. She was a leader of the women's suffrage movement and an active pacifist.
