Physiological or psychological dependence on a regular regime of exercise, characterized by unpleasant symptoms if withdrawal from exercise occurs. The addiction may be for any exercise, but is most commonly associated with distance running. The term is often used in a pejorative sense and implies that the individual has an uncontrollable craving for exercise, which can damage his or her functioning in other activities.
