Any officiating or overseeing priest, but more specifically a class of Vedic priests responsible for the construction of the altars (vedis), the collection and preparation of sacrificial vessels and other requisites, the lighting of the fire, and the immolation of the sacrificial animal during the yajña. Adhvaryus accompany these actions with the recitation of prescribed yajus from the Yajur Veda, hence they are also known as Yajurveda priests.
