Amer. virtuoso on harmonica (mouth organ). First stage appearance, NY 1928. Toured the world as mus.‐hall artist and recitalist. First solo engagement with Sydney SO, 1939. Works written for him by Vaughan Williams, Gordon Jacob, Milhaud, Arnold, etc. Settled in Eng. 1949. Also wrote for periodicals, reviews, etc., and wrote autobiography It Ain't Necessarily So (London, 1984).
