after graduation from Bryn Mawr and further education at Harvard and the Sorbonne, wrote social and political essays for The New Yorker and literary criticism collected in Toward a Radical Middle (1970). Her film reviews for The New York Times were collected in A Year in the Dark (1970); Canaries in the Mineshaft (2001) collects essays on politics and media. Speedboat (1976) is a short, episodic novel about the education and experiences of a young woman journalist, and Pitch Dark (1983) is a similarly constructed novel about a woman journalist breaking off her long-standing affair with a married man.
