A large family of viruses first isolated from cultures of adenoids. They are nonenveloped icosahedral viruses with a double-stranded linear DNA genome. They are responsible for respiratory infections in humans although some are oncogenic in rodents and will transform cells in culture. There are many serotypes (~52) that infect humans.
