adsorption coefficient

Quick Reference

A constant that relates the binding of a molecule to a matrix (soil, column packing, etc.) as a function of the weight of matrix, under defined conditions. Adsorption implies binding to a surface rather than integration into a solid-phase material (absorption: in the case of radiation, changing the energy levels of electrons, in other cases dissolving in the material rather than binding to the surface). The term is also used for absorption of radiation by materials (more or less equivalent to the attenuation coefficient).
