Quick Reference

In criminal proceedings, the definition of ‘adult’ is simply a function of the definition of juvenile—i.e. an adult is any person aged 18 or over. In the context of sentencing, however, the term is sometimes used to mean those who have reached the age of 21, the age at which an offender becomes liable to imprisonment rather than detention in a young offender institution.

Subjects: Social Work.
