Advanced Extension Award

Quick Reference

Aimed at the most able 10 per cent of Advanced Level (A level) students, these awards are designed to encourage a critical and analytical approach to the study of a subject. They require the student to study in depth, and are available in a more restricted range of subjects than the standard A level. By making it possible to identify outstanding students, the AEA was intended to make it unnecessary for universities to develop their own entrance examinations as a response to the increasing number of applicants with good A level results.
