A witness who gives evidence unfavourable to the party who called him. Unless the witness is deemed a hostile witness, his credibility may not be attacked by the party calling him (although contradictory evidence may be called). If, however, the witness is deemed hostile the party calling him may be allowed to introduce evidence of a previous inconsistent statement made by that witness. See also unfavourable witness.
