Quick Reference

A woodworking tool which has its working edge perpendicular to the long axis of the haft. It therefore contrasts with an axe, the working edge of which is parallel with the plane of the haft. Adzes are generally used for trimming and shaping timbers, and for hollowing out large cavities such as in making a dugout canoe.
