Son of Oswulf, dispossessed Aethelred I c.779, at a period when the Northumbrian crown was prey to coups by noble factions. He ruled until 23 September 788, when he was murdered by a close adviser, Sicga, and buried at Hexham. His sons Oelf and Oelfwine were murdered in 791 by order of Aethelred I, restored to power. The British Museum has coins from Aelfwald's reign.
