Quick Reference

Daughter of ealdorman Aethelred and of Aethelflaed, ‘the lady of the Mercians’, was a granddaughter of Alfred the Great and a niece of Edward the Elder. She became queen of Mercia on the death of her mother in June 918 but was soon dispossessed by Edward, ‘deprived of all authority’, and removed to Wessex. Her later life is not recorded, but if she survived, she was probably sent to a monastery.
