Quick Reference

Was the brother of Anna and succeeded him after he had been killed by the Mercians in 654. He then appears to have changed sides, since Bede was very specific that Aethelhere was killed at the battle of the Winwaed (15 November 655) fighting for Penda of Mercia. The marriage to Hereswith, a daughter of Herewith of Deira, and a sister of the abbess Hild, has been shown to be incorrect, as has the reference in Bede to him as ‘the author of the war’, which has convincingly been demonstrated to apply to Penda himself.
