Quick Reference

Another son of Ida, succeeded his brother Adda in 568 and was said by Nennius to have ruled for four years, though the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle reported that Aethelric succeeded Aelle in Deira in 588 and ruled until 593. William of Malmesbury added that Aethelric succeeded to Deira in ‘extreme old age’ and after a life of penury. It has been plausibly suggested that Aethelric's son, Aethelfrith, killed Aelle of Deira in 588 and put in his father as a sub-king to rule Deira.
