Was a brother of both king Anna and Aethelhere, his predecessors, and took the throne when the latter was killed in 655. He stood sponsor for Swithhelm, later king of the East Saxons c.656, at his palace of Rendlesham in Suffolk, not far from Sutton Hoo. He died c.663.
