Quick Reference

(Skt.). Adventitious vices or negative emotions, a concept associated with the notion of the embryonic Buddha (tathāgata-garbha) in Mahāyāna Buddhism. According to the tathāgata-garbha teachings, the minds of beings are intrinsically pure due to the inherent presence of the potentiality for enlightenment (bodhi) or Buddha-nature. This potentiality is temporarily obscured by mental obscuration, such as vices and other negative mental phenomena, which, however, are ‘adventitious’ since they are temporary obscurations that can be removed.
