A metabolite of arginine produced by arginine decarboxylase, that can be metabolized to putrescine by bacterial agmatinase. Agmatine suppresses polyamine biosynthesis and polyamine uptake by cells by inducing antizyme. It binds to imidazoline receptors, and may be the endogenous ligand for imidazoline (I1) receptors, and to α2-adrenoreceptors. It is thought to be a neurotransmitter involved in behavioural and visceral control.
