Quick Reference

(1850–1929)

A leading member of the Brāhmo Samāj from 1873, Agnihotri broke with them in 1886 and, the following year, founded the Dev Samāj (Divine Society). Rejecting Brahmo rationalism, he taught that only he, as guru and enlightened being, could show the way to eternal bliss, eventually making himself the sole object of worship for his followers.
