Quick Reference

A family of small, very basic proteins (71 aa) encoded by polyoma viruses (neurotropic JC virus, SV40, and BK virus). They apparently regulate viral gene expression, inhibit DNA repair after DNA damage, and interfere with DNA damage-induced cell cycle regulation. JC virus expresses agnoprotein during the lytic infection of glial cells in progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy (PML), and in some neural tumours, particularly medulloblastoma.
