(suborder Ruminantia, infra-order Tylopoda)
An extinct family of N. American ruminants closely related to the oreodonts but more slightly built and with more primitive features (e.g. a long tail and clawed feet). They lived from the upper Eocene into the Miocene and, judging by their claws, inhabited trees or dug for roots and tubers.
