Indian Islamic modernist writer, educationist, and political activist. He promoted an Indian Muslim nationalism that gave rise to the All-India Muslim League. Writings emphasized a rational approach to Islam and modern education for Muslims. Founder of the Aligarh Mohammadan Anglo-Oriental College (now Aligarh Muslim University). In recognition of his accomplishments, the British government knighted him in 1888.
