Quick Reference

[Ir., brightness, glow, radiance; splendour, glory, fame].

Name of a multitude of figures, both male and female, from early Ireland. Male bearers of this name appear to be historical and are cited in genealogies, especially of the Ciarraige family, who lived along what is now the Limerick-Kerry border in pre-Norman times. It is not now possible to know which Áine is commemorated in place-names such as Lios Áine ‘Lissan’, Northern Ireland, or Dún Áine ‘Dunany’, at the entrance to Dundalk Bay, Co. Louth.
