Americanastronomer. At Lick Observatory he carried out a vast survey of double stars, initially with William Joseph Hussey (1862–1926), discovering over 3100 new pairs. In 1923 he was the first to see the companion of Mira. His New General Catalogue of Double Stars was published in 1932 (see Aitken Double Star Catalogue).
