A village god in Tamil Nadu who is thought to act as a night-watchman, patrolling village boundaries and dispersing evil spirits. He is a pure, vegetarian god with royal characteristics. His temples contain terracotta horses, and figures of elephants donated by devotees; they also usually house a shrine to Karuppan, a little deity who acts as Aiyaṉār's servant. A cockerel is displayed on his banner. See also Aiyappan.
