In Greek mythology, a hero of the Trojan war, the son of Telamon, king of Salamis; he was proverbial for his size and strength. After the death of Achilles, he quarrelled with Odysseus as to which of them should have Achilles' armour; when it was awarded to Odysseus, Ajax committed suicide.

He is sometimes referred to as the Greater Ajax to distinguish him from the Lesser Ajax, son of Oileus, leader of the Locrian forces who fought on the Greek side at Troy.
