Quick Reference

A category of Tamil literature which deals with the ‘interior world’, essentially the nuances of love between men and women, set against a variety of landscapes, as opposed to puram literature which deals with the ‘exterior world’ of life outside the family (from the valour of kings, to wars, to ethics, to death and dying). Five of the eight Caṅkam anthologies are dedicated to akam poetry.
