The phase immediately after exercise, during which extra oxygen is consumed to restore muscle phosphagen stores (ATP and creatine phosphate). This phase lasts only a short time (the processes have a half reaction time of about 15 min) and requires about 2–3 l of extra oxygen. Compare lactacid phase.
