Akongo, the supreme being, the everlasting one of the forest, is a spiritual being who has close relations with humans. Though he is a god and is wrapped in mystery, he has the characteristics of humans, and has an intense interest in the activities of men, acting as a guardian of humans. It is not a difficult matter to approach him. Ancestral spirits, with a close association with Akongo, also have an abiding interest in the concerns of men.
The sky is supported by Libanja, who holds it up in the east with a pole, and by Songo, who supports it with a pole in the west. If they become tired and the sky tilts, all humans will become lizards. In the beginning the creator lived among men. But men were quarrelsome. One day they had an intense quarrel and Akongo left them to themselves. He went and hid in the forest, and nobody has seen him since. People today cannot tell what he is like.
