1 Basis, substratum; sometimes used simply as an abbreviation for the Yogācāra concept of the ‘storehouse consciousness’ (ālaya-vijñāna) but also found in Tibetan Buddhist usage as a distinct concept in the sense of the ‘ground of being’. These two aspects of the term thus distinguish the ontological and epistemological aspects of the ālāya-vijñāna.
2 The term also occurs in a non-philosophical sense as a synonym of tṛṣṇā.meaning attachment, clinging, or desire.
