Quick Reference

Ancient British name for a hill on the banks of the Leven where it meets the Clyde at Dumbarton, Scotland. It is identical with Dumbarton [ScG dùn, hill, fortress, mound; breatann, of the Britons] itself. The name was recorded as Alcluith in Bede's History (ad 731) and probably serves as a basis for Macpherson's Balclutha.
