Quick Reference

(b Paderborn, 1501/2; d Soest, Westphalia, 1555/61).

German printmaker and painter. He worked mainly in Soest and was one of the leading artists in Westphalia in his day. His numerous prints, which include religious subjects, portraits, and ornamental designs, show the all-pervading influence of Dürer (he even signed his work with an AG monogram shaped much like Dürer's AD). These prints are mainly line engravings, but Aldegrever also made a few etchings. Little is known of his activity as a painter.

Subjects: Renaissance Art.
