Quick Reference

A sequence of characters in a uniform resource locator that stands for a much longer sequence of characters. For example the URL http://www.open.ac.uk/˜studentdetails contains the alias ˜studentdetails which could stand for the sequence of characters mainfiles/secondyear/ computing/ projects/coursem99 that designates the file containing the Hypertext Markup Language text for a Web page. When a Web server encounters a URL which has an alias in it, it substitutes the sequence of characters for the alias. Aliases are used in order to reduce the amount of typing that users of a browser have to carry out when initially they want to access a Web page.
