A term used by analogy with karyotype; the expression pattern of particular alleles, e.g. in a tumour cell population compared to normal tissue. The expression of particular microsatellite markers or isoenzymes, revealing the alleles being expressed, may show whether a tumour is polyclonal or monoclonal in origin and the extent to which further divergence (aneuploidy) has occurred.
