US astronaut. He was aboard the space shuttle Atlantis in July and August 1992 to deploy the European Retrievable Carrier and demonstrate the tethered satellite system (TSS). In March 1994, and February–March 1996, he was a member of the Columbia crews that conducted microgravity tests. He flew a second TSS mission, STS-75, in 1996. The TSS was lost on the latter flight. He was selected as an astronaut in 1987 and logged over 900 hours in space before retiring from NASA in 1997.
