Formed in April 1970 to bridge the gap between unionists and nationalists in Northern Ireland. The party was represented at the Sunningdale conference (December 1973) and in the power‐sharing executive (January–May 1974). Its share of the vote peaked in 1977, when its candidates secured 14.4 per cent in the district council elections: recent electoral performance has been weaker. Though the Alliance party has never won a seat in the Westminster Parliament, it has seven seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly elected in March 2007, together with a number of local councillors.
