Either of two Canadian satellites designed to study the ionosphere, tracking solar disturbances that affect radio communications. Alouette 1 was Canada's first satellite and the first to be built by a country other than the USA or USSR. It was launched in September 1962 and set a longevity record of ten years. Alouette 2 was launched in November 1965.
