Second Seljuk Turkish sultan (r. 1063–72/3). United the region from Syria to Iran and developed its administration under the grand vizier Nizam al-Mulk. His 1071 defeat of the Byzantines at Manzikert and his threat to Jerusalem (captured that year by Turkish raiders) provoked the Crusades and opened Anatolia to Turkish settlement.
