At sunset, beginning as the Sun nears the horizon, mountains exposed to direct sunlight in the east, particularly if snow-covered, assume a series of colours changing from yellow-orange to a rosy pink, which finally becomes purplish. The same series of colours in reverse order is seen on mountains in the west at sunrise.
