Quick Reference

French family of patrons. The family, documented from 1100, originally came from Touraine, but in 1469 the line passed to a cadet branch, the Chaumont-d’Amboise. Pierre II Chaumont-d’Amboise (d 1473), Counsellor of Charles VII and Louis XI and governor of Touraine, had a large family, several members of which rose to prominence and were active as patrons: his eighth son, (1) Cardinal Georges I d’Amboise and his grandson (2) Charles II d’Amboise, Comte de Chaumont, both resident for a time in Milan, brought Italian artists to work on their projects in France, and they were instrumental in the spread of the Renaissance there.
