Quick Reference

His pioneering account of English printing to 1600, Typographical Antiquities (1749), was the first to try to date books by identifying their types: the work was revised and enlarged in three volumes by Herbert (1785–96). Ames's vast collection of early title-pages, taken from imperfect and damaged books, is now in the British Library.
