Premiered 6 Aug. 1938 by the Martha Graham company, at Vermont State Armory, Bennington, with Graham, Hawkins, and Housely Stevens jun. as the Speaker. It is divided into six sections, which portray the course of American social history. Texts are spoken, including the Declaration of Independence, Jonathan Edwards's sermons, and lines from Walt Whitman. It was Graham's first work to feature a male soloist.
