Influential Shafii jurist who integrated theology (kalam) with jurisprudential methods. Raised and educated in Baghdad and Damascus, he moved at an early age to Egypt, where his fame spread. Accused of adopting heretical rationalist methods, he moved back to Damascus, where he died. His most famous work is Al-ihkam fi usul al-ahkam on Islamic jurisprudence.
