A US society for aerospace engineers and scientists. It was formed in 1963 by the merger of the American Rocket Society (1930) and the Institute of Aerospace Sciences (1932). The AIAA calls itself the ‘world's largest professional society devoted to the progress of engineering and science in aviation, space, and defence’. It had more than 31 000 members in 2004. Its headquarters are in Reston, Virginia.
