An atmospheric pollutant that may react with combustion gases, such as nitric oxide, to produce tiny particles of ammonium nitrate, which aggravate respiratory and coronary problems. Often described as arising primarily from livestock wastes, but comparable (or greater) quantities are found in urban areas, produced by certain vehicles, apparently as a result of some action of catalytic converters.
