Premiered 17 Feb. 1886 at La Scala, Milan, with Antonietta Bella, Ernestina Operti, and Cecchetti. Its action displays the progress of mankind from Chaos, through various historical scenes like the Triumph of Caesar and the Battle of Legnano, to an apotheosis in the Temple of Love. Its original cast featured hundreds of dancers, actors, children, and extras, also live animals including an elephant.
