Conqueror and governor of Egypt. Invaded Egypt from Hijaz in 639; established control over the whole country in 642. Founded Fustat as capital instead of Alexandria. Replaced as governor by Caliph Uthman. Fought with Muawiyah in the Battle of Siffin, 657, and earned reinstatement in Egypt. Remained governor until his death.
