Amsterdam Stock Exchange

Quick Reference

Amsterdam first established a stock exchange in 1602 to trade in shares of the Dutch East India Company; it thus claims to be the world's oldest stock exchange. Dealers are known as hoekmen. In 1997 it merged with the European Options Exchange, also based in Amsterdam, and in 2000 it joined with the Paris Bourse and the Brussels Stock Exchange to form Euronext NV. The Amsterdam Exchange is now known as Euronext Amsterdam.
