A polypeptide (islet amyloid polypeptide, IAPP, 37 aa) of the calcitonin family, derived from an 89-aa precursor by proteolytic processing. It is produced by pancreatic beta cells and cosecreted with insulin although it is found in fibrillar deposits (pancreatic amyloid) in type 2 diabetes. Amylin moderates the effects of insulin and controls nutrient influx to the blood by an inhibition of food intake, gastric emptying, and glucagon secretion.
